Flitwick Eagles Ladies took on Stotfold Ladies this weekend where they were knocked out of the first round of the cup after a jam packed 4-3 defeat. Despite being in contention most of the match, Flitwick's defence just couldn't withstand Stotfold's attackers.
The local Flitwick Ladies began the game with a 4-3-3 formation, attempting to dominate the game from the middle of the park and send all the possession they gained out toward their fast-paced wingers who could eventually cross the ball into the target girl in the box, or if the wingers took on the challenging defence themselves. Although this tactic operated for Flitwick, Stotfold eventually figured their game plan out and continued to create gaps in the middle for Flitwick, pushing them back until Flitwick’s manager was forced to switch up the game plan, after going a goal behind.
The girls didn’t let their heads drop; they knew of the challenge they were facing against the Division one side. The change in shape to a 4-2-3-1, allowed more defensive cover and a faster counterattack for Flitwick, a ball from the midfield sent Flitwick winger Shauna Cole face to face with the goalkeeper; the only player in front of her and the rest of her teammates hope sat on her shoulders…
What a spectacular goal by Cole!
Cole sticks her shot in the top corner, scoring a brilliant goal, putting her side back in the game as the score shows 1-1. The Stotfold ladies looked shocked, despite the respect between the two teams, they would’ve felt that they were the better team on the day and in terms of status off the field, but this was just the start for Flitwick’s battle, they had finally found their feet in the contest!
As the game resumed from the referee’s signal, Flitwick soon after doubled their goal, Jasmin Currey, beautifully slotted the ball past the number one in the sticks, who had no chance - 2-1 Flitwick. For the first time in the game Flitwick’s ladies were in front, holding off until half time the ladies went for the team-talk ahead and heading into the next round of the cup.
However, heading out for the second half, the game did not end in the fairy-tale they would’ve wanted. Despite Flitwick having a handful of chances, making a goal line clearance and scoring another goal; two avoidable defensive errors allowed Stotfold to finish the game winners and progress to round two.
An unlucky day for our local ladies in Flitwick, but forward Emily Turner would still be delighted to be on the score sheet yet again.
