Luton Town achieved their twelfth win of the season against bottom of the league Barnsley yesterday evening to move up to seventh position in the league, just behind West Brom on goal-difference. The Hatters are continuing their great run of form and are keeping up with the wealthier teams at the top of the table. Last nights win came against their 2019 league one promotion partners in a 2-1 win at Kenilworth Road. Coming from Yorkshire, Barnsley brought a small loyal following of 306 fans to the game.
Starting the game, Luton's prolific strike duo of Elijah Adebayo and Harry Cornick joined together up front for the first time since November. The pair have now scored twenty Championship goals combined this season (After last night). The rest of the line-up stayed the same as last weeks win against Swansea. A quick start from the Tykes saw Barnsley put a tight angled shot wide of the post, just one minute into the game. The first twenty minutes onwards was relatively quiet until James Bree's corner into the box caused a scramble for ball, which Alan Campbell managed to place into the back of the net, despite Barnsley's best efforts to clear the ball. Confusion over the scramble had Luton fans thinking Gabe Osho got the final touch, but the referees goal-line technology announced that the Scottish midfielder had grabbed his third goal in the Championship this season.
Just before half-time, the Tykes created a dangerous counter attack where Carlton Morris left Luton centre back Osho on the floor with his tricky feet, before placing the ball into the back of the net past James Shea. Going down the tunnel for halftime level, Nathan Jones knew his men had some work to do after a lacklustre performance from the Hatters.
Starting the second half, Amari Bell didn't take long to boost the crowds volume, when he took on three players down the left wing finding himself in the box. Squaring it to Harry Cornick, it should've been a certain goal, but Cornick couldn't find the back of the net and placed the ball into the side netting. Luton appeared to be struggling up front, so Nathan Jones replaced centre back Gabe Osho with attacker Fred Onyedinma who certainly had a quick impact. Onyedinma was fouled by Barnsley keeper Bradley Collins just a minute after his introduction and the referee awarded Luton a penalty.
Adebayo stepped up to take the penalty kick, Collins taunted him and pointed to his top right corner to which Adebayo fired the ball in the exact spot the keeper asked for, despite his efforts, Collins did not save the penalty putting Luton 2-1 ahead. Luton had a few more efforts throughout the match however they could not put these chances away. Despite this, Luton defended their lead and won the match.
The win contributed to Luton moving just below the play-off spots.
